Welcome to Stillwater Homeopathic and Well Being Centre

Stillwater Homeopathic and Well Being Centre is based in Glendowie, Auckland. Founded by Sue Spurling the Centre offers you a peaceful, healing environment in which to release old patterns of dis-ease, bringing with it the freedom to enjoy life more completely or simply  take time out from the frenetic world in which we live.

We are all aware of the stresses encountered in our daily lives, which, if allowed to continue can make us ill. Although conventional medicine can help relieve the symptoms of many common ailments and chronic diseases, it may not change the reason for our becoming ill, so we are likely to become ill again.

We all carry memories of past hurts, injuries and pain locked in our bodies, often unrecognised, which can cause emotional and physical distress. Our  physical health is usually a reflection of our inner state.

Through specific gentle techniques and therapies it is possible to release past traumas that are stored in our bodies at a deep cellular level. By releasing these memories allows the body to heal and bring about profound changes in how we are then able to live our lives more completely and more joyfully.

About Sue Spurling
MA RN DipHom RSCN RCST DipHV TIDHA
Classical Homeopath, Holistic Therapist & Teacher

I came to New Zealand from the UK in 2003 and now enjoy being an NZ citizen. I have been exploring and teaching 'Mind Body Medicine' / Health and Healing for over 25 years, in a variety of settings both in hospitals in London and Oxford in the UK and at National Women's Hospital, Auckland as well as in various complementary and Healthy Living Centres and clinics in the UK and Auckland.

I have spent a large part of my nursing and holistic therapies practise working with people with acute and chronic health problems of all kinds. Through my personal, family and professional work I have seen the amazing abilities of the body to heal itself given the opportunity.

Study is on-going and more recently I have been working with Brandon Bays to become a Journey Practitioner. The Journey offers exactly what the words say, a Journey to discover and release old patterns held in the body, often unconsciously. Through guided visualisations past traumas, beliefs and emotional pain can be released and the resulting freedom brings transformational life changes.

Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathy is a safe and effective form of energy medicine, which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances, which have been vigorously succussed (shaken) to 'vitalise' the substance. It is given in liquid drops or tablet form. The resulting remedy or medicine triggers the body’s natural system of healing.

When treating a patient the homeopath will match the most appropriate remedy to the patient. A remedy is selected according to the unique qualities, personality, likes and dislikes of an individual, and aims to treat the causes of health problems not just the symptoms.

It works on the principle of “like cures like” - that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness. For example, one remedy, which might be used in a person suffering from insomnia is coffea, a remedy made from coffee.

A carefully selected homeopathic remedy acts as a trigger to the body’s own healing processes.

Homeopathy has been used in Europe for over two hundred years, but has an honourable tradition dating back to ancient Greece. It was Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a medical doctor working in 1796 in Germany, who, through his rigorous practice and study, developed the scientific and philosophical foundations of this gentler way of healing. His scientific principles form the basis of successful homeopathic practice today.

Homeopathic remedies are a unique, potentised energy medicine, drawn from the plant, mineral and animal worlds. They are diluted to such a degree that not one molecule of the original substance can be detected beyond the 12c potency. They work by gently boosting the natural energy of the body.  There is no danger of addiction or toxicity. Hahnemann found that the it was only with the introduction of succussion (vigorous shaking) that the real ability of a remedy to stimulate the body's own healing was triggered.

Homeopathy can be used to treat most conditions, from acute fevers, childhood conditions, behavioural disturbances, allergies, bites, stings, to chronic health problems, such as arthritis, respiratory problems, and more serious complaints – in adults, children, babies and animals.

Examples of conditions that can be treated:
  • First Aid situations - burns, stings, bites, sprains, sore throats, upset tummies
  • Infant & childhood diseases
  • Behavioural problems
  • Women’s health care, pregnancy and childbirth
  • Pre and postnatal care
  • Men’s health Care
  • Chronic illness
  • Allergies, asthma, respiratory problems
  • Digestive problems
  • Migraines
  • Infertility
  • Serious health problems
  • Anxiety & stress-related problems
  • Insomnia

There have been numerous good quality research studies showing the effectiveness of homeopathy to treat illnesses.

In February 2010 the Journal of Oncology published a study demonstrating that homeopathic remedies can induce apoptosis (programmed cell death of cancer cells) in breast cancer cell lines with a positive result in terms of patient’s health outcome.

The laboratory study was conducted at the Department of Molecular Pathology, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas and published in the Journal of Oncology,  2010 Feb;36(2):395-403.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for their therapeutic effects.

Aromatherapy uses specific properties of Essential Oils (EO's) to bring about particular effects. Smells have an almost immediate effect through their action on the brain, especially the limbic system, which is associated with memory. A baby recognises its mother through her particular smell. Memories are often evoked by particular smells. Oils are absorbed through the skin and also by their vapour being absorbed through the nose.

Aromatherapy can therefore help to relax, through direct action on muscles and nerves but also on the limbic system in the brain. Similarly, EO's can be used for their stimulatory effect and can be useful, for example, for sore muscles after vigorous exercise. Essential oils can have amazing uplifting as well as relaxing effects on all levels of our being.

Essential oils are highly volatile (they evaporate quickly when exposed to air), very concentrated aromatic extracts from botanical sources, such as leaves, flowers, bark, berries and roots, for therapeutic effects on the mind, body, spirit. They can be applied in various ways including massage, inhalation, creams, lotions and in baths.

Uses of Essential Oils
Essential oils can be used to help in many conditions some of which are listed below:

  • Stress-related conditions
  • Pain
  • Migraines
  • Anxiety
  • Emotional and spiritual distress
  • Sleeping problems
  • Constipation
  • Skin problems and burns
  • Infections ….. and more

Carrier Oils
Because essential oils are concentrated they must be diluted in a carrier or base oil or cream/lotion before being applied to the skin. And some essential oils are unsuitable for use in certain conditions, or need to used with caution and indepth knowledge, such as for pregnancy, with children, with the elderly. It is therefore important to know which oils can be applied to the body,  how and when to use them safely.

The carrier oils, in which essential oils are diluted are also of great therapeutic value and help carry the EO’s into the body at varying rates of uptake. They also have their own therapeutic and nourishing properties.

These include such oils as sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, peach kernel oil, evening primrose oil, jojoba oil, wheatgerm oil. Even some of these should not be used directly on the skin, sometimes because of its thick texture or its particularly strong odour.

History of Essential Oil Use
Extensive therapeutic use of essential oils has been recorded in ancient China and India and much of the Middle East. Roman soldiers on campaign had their wounds treated with honey and myrrh. Terra Cotta distillers have been found in archaeological digs, but widespread use of distilled essential oils from Europe began after the invention of glass distillation mechanisms in the 16th century and this opened the door to extracting the volatile components from Chamomile, Lavender and Rosemary and other plants found mainly in the northern regions.

The term "aromatherapie" was coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928. He utilized the word to imply the therapeutic use of aromatic substances (essential oils).

Therapeutic Massage

We all need to have strategies to help us cope with the frantic pace of life. Many find it difficult to deal effectively with the stressors that have such negative impacts on us. There are many ways we can still our busy minds - through music, being out in nature, going to the gym, meditating, all of which can help reduce stress levels and help us regain a sense of our own wholeness.

As youngsters we have proabably spent a lot of our time being active, out of doors and more in touch with our basic nature. But as we age we spend more time in our heads and in our minds. This becomes evident when we toss and turn at night, finding it difficult to switch our minds off. Massage can help us counteract the pressures of work and domestic busyness so that we can learn what it is to sleep well again.

The gentle art of touch is not only about offering quiet space, reassurance, caring and soothing of tensions but also about helping us re-connect with that deep peaceful place within us that holds our wisdom and strong sense of who we really are. This applies not only to the person receiving massage but also the one offering it. What a beautiful gift.

This healing art involves the use of touch with or without the use of oils, usually using hands (although elbows, feet and knees can be used), to bring about changes in soft tissues, circulation and to promote a range of effects, such as reduction in anxiety, relief of muscle tension, warmth, pain relief, and can promote a sense of wellbeing and peace. It can be a voyage of self-discovery as we re-learn how to relax and be more in touch with ourselves, even basic things such as enjoying peaceful breathing and moving more freely....

Relaxation and Guided Imagery

Imagery is the most fundamental language we have. Everything you do, the mind processes through images. When we recall events from our past or childhood, we think of pictures, images, sounds, pain, etc. It is hardly ever be through words..

Our thoughts have a direct influence on the way we feel and behave. If we tend to dwell on sad or negative thoughts, we most likely are not a very happy person. Likewise, if we think that our job is enough to give us a headache, we probably will come home with throbbing temples each day. This is just another clear example of the power the mind exerts over the body.

If we can learn to direct the images in our head, we can help our body heal itself. If we learn to use our imagination in a way that is purposeful and directed, it can be a tremendously powerful vehicle to get us to where we want to go, including to better health.

Imagery had been found to be very effective for the treatment of stress. Imagery is at the centre of relaxation techniques designed to release brain chemicals that act as our body's natural brain tranquilizers, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels.

There are different methods that can be used. They can be used as a means of handling difficult situations more easily. But they are all based on promoting a relaxing atmosphere and helping you to use your imagination in a gentle but directed way to release any patterns that may be hindering your steps towards improved health and well being.

How Relaxation and Guided Imagery can help
A couple of examples where it has proved of wonderful benefit:

A lady came to see me some years ago with shoulder pain. Through guided imagery she helped to resolve some grief issues around her relationship with her father. Her pain went after the first session.

A pregnant lady came to see me with anxiety around her forthcoming birth, especially the thought of not coping with pain. Through guided visualisation, she connected very deeply with her baby in a new way and walked out smiling. She phoned about 3 weeks later and sounded very light and happy and full of excited anticipation, having released the fear of pain during childbirth. She later went on to have a beautiful little boy.

Energy Healing using Reiki principles

Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a combination of two Japanese words REI and KI meaning Universal Life Energy.

Reiki is a 'hands on' form of healing, which evolved from teachings, introduced into Japan in the 19th century by the Sensei Mikao Usui. There are many stories about who he was, including the possibility of him being a Buddhist monk.

His words as quoted from his original Handbook, state:

“My Usui Reiki Ryoho is an original system of healing; there is nothing like it this in the world. It is an original method based on Intuitive power in the universe. It always seems to go where needed or flow in response to the need or demand of the recipient.
By this power, the body gets healthy and enhances happiness of life and peaceful mind.”

Reiki compliments all other medical and healthcare treatments. It is of growing interest to many chiropractors, doctors, psychologists and others. It is already being used in hospitals in America, United Kingdom and Australia. Reiki is known to speed up the healing process and can minimize the side effects of conventional medical treatment.

A Reiki treatment feels like a ray of warm and gentle sunshine flowing through and around you, bringing comfort to your ‘whole self.’ It will treat the body, mind and spirit as a whole. Reiki is powerful, yet wonderfully gentle and nurturing. During a treatment, the recipient  lies down and remains fully clothed.

Reiki is especially helpful when dealing with all stress related disorders.

Reiki principles:

Just for today:

Do not be angry

Do not worry

Be grateful

Work with integrity

Be kind to others.
